A New Experience

In preparing for this baby’s arrival, one of the main concerns of mine and the doctor’s is whether or not I can go into natural labor. He’s given me some things to try and I also had the idea to try acupuncture. I have heard good things about it and that it really works. So I had my first appointment last Tues.

Wow, I had no idea what I was in for. It truly was a “foreign” experience. I know this lady personally, she is in my church ward, and I had no idea what she would do. I was expecting a couple of needles maybe and was a little nervous about it. Was it painful…YES! Were the needles the worst part…NO!

As I tried to wrap my mind around what she was explaining and what she was doing, I felt a little overwhelmed. So when I got home, I started looking things up on the internet to help me better understand what I had gone through. So for your curiosity and reading pleasure, here is what I found:

Many of the concepts emphasized in traditional Chinese medicine have no true counterpart in Western medicine. One of these concepts is qi (pronounced "chi"), which is considered a vital force or energy responsible for controlling the workings of the human mind and body. Qi flows through the body via channels, or pathways, which are called meridians. There are a total of 20 meridians: 12 primary meridians, which correspond to specific organs, organ systems or functions, and eight secondary meridians. Imbalances in the flow of qi cause illness; correction of this flow restores the body to balance.

It works by applying pressure to acupoints, meridians and groups of muscles or nerves to remove blockages that prevent the free flow of qi. Removing these blockages restores the balance of qi in the body, leading to improved health and vitality.

I did what is called “cupping” on me, in which drawing up the skin is believed to open up the skin’s pores, which helps to stimulate the flow of blood, balances and realigns the flow of qi, breaks up obstructions, and creates an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body.

Depending on the condition being treated, the cups will be left in place from 5 to 10 minutes. Several cups may be placed on a patient’s body at the same time. Some practitioners will also apply small amounts of medicated oils or herbal oils to the skin just before the cupping procedure,

In “air” cupping, instead of using a flame to heat the cup, the cup is applied to the skin, and a suction pump is attached to the rounded end of the jar. The pump is then used to create the vacuum.

While cupping is considered relatively safe (especially air cupping, which does not include the risk of fire and heat), it can cause some swelling and bruising on the skin. As the skin under a cup is drawn up, the blood vessels at the surface of the skin expand. This may result in small, circular bruises on the areas where the cups were applied. These bruises are usually painless, however, and disappear within a few days of treatment.

Yeah, it looks more like hickies on the skin. I also had my neck, legs, and back scraped which gave me a rash. And in the end I did have too qi-punctures to my shoulders. Those felt like an average stick of a needle, like when you get your blood drawn.  The next day my shoulders were so sore.
So in summing up my experience, it wasn't horrible, it was painful, it was really different. You just kind of have to let go and have faith in what she tells you. It's almost like switching religions. You can't compare it, you just have to believe it. I have another appointment next week. I'm a little nervous, but if it works and she can do what she says she can do, then it will all be worth it. If it doesn't work, then I've had an experience I would have otherwise never had and I'm all about new experiences.

Springtime at Preschool

This was my last time teaching the little preschool group this year. We made these cute little spring flower baskets (thanks to Emily's blog for the idea) and I think the kids enjoyed themselves. It's amazing watching the kids' different interest and noting their different attention spans. I think some of it has to do with age, and others, it's just interest. Julianne is all over the place, where as Sophia is very meticulous about hers. Some boys like it and some boys are done in two seconds. Some want to do everything themselves, others want me to jump right in and help.

As I look to next fall, I would really love to start a JoySchool, with a group of excited mothers. Check out the curriculum HERE and let me know if you are interested. I've used the curriculum before and loved it. My kids loved, loved, it too. Or if you know of someone who might be interested, let me know as well.

The Power of Deliberate Mothers

As many of  you know, I was away over the weekend at a Power of Moms Retreat, up in Park City, at Richard and Linda Eyres home. They are the authors of many New York Times Best Seller books and they run a site called http://www.valuesparenting.com/ that everyone should check out. It was an amazing weekend filled with old and new friends. This retreat was a different experince for me. The same curriculum was taught that I had heard last June, but this time I really felt validated in the efforts I have made as mom over the last year. I was surrounded by other women who believed in the same parenting philosophies as I do and were doing the best they could to raise amazing kids and create amazing families that can influence the world. It made you feel stronger, more capable, and more "powerful" as a mom.

Women are very powerful and being a mom is a great priviledge and challenge given from the Lord.
Here are quite a few of the board members behind the Power of Moms website. Many came from all across the country to be there. We had a wonderful board meeting where we all got to meet each other, talk about our visions and ideas, and enjoy cooking and eating a wonderful meal together. They are all such great women and it was uplifting to be with them.

It was a fun experience to be in the kitchen cooking with all these women and chatting. I could use that more often for sure. There is strength in numbers.

Some of the things I took away from the weekend were:

As mothers, we need to figure out what we need to "THRIVE" not just "SURVIVE," in the everyday challenges of motherhood.

We have got to restore margins to our lives, so that we have the ability to create space for serendipitous moments and leave room for the spirit to speak to us. We too often stretch ourselves and overcrowd our lives, that we don't have moments where we can feel the spirit and really know how we can best utilize our abilities.  We need to evaluate our responsibilities and delete the things that are not helping us achieve our greater purpose, as an individual, and as a family.

We need to create a Family Culture that is stronger than our kids, peer culture, media culture, celebrity culture, ...

I also highly recommend the Mind Organization for Moms, that is featured on the site. I know it works, I've tried it and things run so much more smoothly in my life when I'm doing it. Check it out here. You actually can free your mind, and be present for your kids throughout the day, instead of constantly swimming in what you have to do, or trying not to forget everything, which is what I've been doing lately. So, so, good to go over the system again. If you would like to know more about it, please let me know, and I would be happy to share.

So there you go. That's my weekend review! It was great and exhausting (did I mention I didn't get to sleep on Friday night until midnight and then couldn't fall asleep until 3 AM because of reflux and was up and at it at 6 AM for a another full retreat day). I was kind of a zombie by two in the afternoon, but I was more on the team helping to run the retreat and wasn't too upset that I wasn't catching every word the speakers said.

All I can say is great weekend, great women, and a great feeling knowing that I'm on the right path doing the right things. I'm just greatful for the opportunity given me.

Painting a Picture is Fun to Do!

Well it's Spring Break around these parts, and we are just hangin' out around the house. We've cleaned house, played outside, visited a park with some friends, and today we decided to get our craftiness on. If you like creative art projects for your kids, check out the new widget on the side for Deep Space Sparkle. This lady has all kinds of great ideas. That's where I got the idea for the bunnies.

We got to SPONGE PAINT!
haven't done that before

 Here's the final products.

(Do not ask about the hot pink sweatsuit or the really bad idea for a hair do today. I'm struggling people, to clothe this ginormous belly of mine. Focus on the PAINTINGS people, please!)

Gabriela's Last Dance Recital

Yeah, we had our last dance recital this past weekend. We were all excited to see her perform again. She's always done such a great job and this year she was in three numbers. (We secretly dread this concert each year because it is soooo looong and we know we will have a hard time with the other two.) I have a lot to say about dance and have been meaning to write a post about it for a long time, but when I came into the dressing room at intermission and found Gabriela lying on the floor, I knew we were both done with this whole thing. She told me she wanted "to go home and that she missed her stuffed animals and blankets." I feel pretty confindent in my decision to end this.

But onto the concert:
 My little prima ballerina.
She looks so skinny! That's why her nickname at home is "little bones."
Wish I could say that about myself. Wow, my face has really rounded out!
This ballet number was to "Someday My Prince Will Come" from Snow White.

This is from "What's New at the Zoo?"

Yes, she is supposed to make that face.
And this lyrical number is to "When Somebody Loved Me" from Toy Story.

We were all very proud of her and she was happy as pie to finally get flowers after her performance. We love that kid and admire her will to stick to it and work hard. She really has come a long way and it's been fun to watch her dance over the last three years.

Why I love my husband...

Doesn't it often seem like the women carry more of the load in teaching our families the gospel of Jesus Christ. We seem to initiate Family Home Evening, Family Scripture Study, Family Prayer and Family Traditions.

As much as I would love for my husband to take on those responsibilities, I'm always amazed at how well he does when given an assignment. When I teach the girls I feel like I'm preaching. I'm trying so hard to drive the message home and I want to review and make sure they get what I'm teaching and try to teach it in several different ways. Miguel is usually quick to stop me before I go on for hours.

Now contrast that with his teaching style. Our most memorable Family Home Evening lessons have been ones he has given. After conference this past weekend, I wanted to have a lesson on service. I know everyone is shocked by that choice, but I handed it over to Miguel. He took a totally different approach than I would have done. He pulled out this picture of Christ washing the apostles feet and went over the story with the girls.
He then explained that we should be like Jesus and serve each other. So he decided that our activity was going to be washing each others feet. We all looked at each other a little stunned and the girls were quick to jump up and run to the bathroom. We all picked someone's feet to wash and all piled into our tiny bathroom. We put a stool in the tub and I washed Julianne's feet, she washed Papi's feet, he washed Sophia's feet, she washed Gabriela's, and she washed mine. He then placed this picture in our kitchen for the week to remind us to serve one another.

It was perfect, simple, memorable, and a great teaching tool. He's a genius! I love him!

Some Great Ideas

I just thought I would share a couple of great things I've found or heard lately that might interest you. First off, I've been waiting a whole year to implement this.

You can get it here: http://deseretbook.com/Christ-Centered-Easter-Day-by-Day-Activities-Celebrate-Week-Joe-Janet-Hales/i/4253892

Last Easter, I really felt like the real meaning of Easter just wasn't emphasized enough in our home (and the world for that matter). I love traditions and teaching activities and that is just what this little book is designed to do. It gives day by day activities, scripture references and so much more for each day between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. I've been reading and getting ready and am so excited about what is to come. It is definately worth checking out.

Another thing I read while waiting at the doctor's office (I'm doing that a lot lately) is the idea of a world travel "staycation." That's right,  you never have to leave your home, but to keep the kiddos occupied or to give you some focus over the summer, you get out a great big map and ask the kids where they want to go. Each week takes on another country somewhere in the world and you plan activites to go along with that country. I think this is such a great idea since we can loose focus over the summer and kind of meander throught it. We can try new foods, make crafts, try new restaurants, watch educational videos, take fieldtrips and who knows what else.

Here are a couple of sights with some good ideas:

http://www.bookstorepeople.com/2010/06/staycation-this-year-travel-the-world-from-home-with-the-magic-tree-house-series/ (another really cute idea)

I hope you enjoy these.

As of the Ruiz household, we are surviving with our heads above water. We are eating (probably not the best meals we've had), the house is presentable (probably not the cleanest it's been), and we are civil to one another (mom's just not as nice as she's been), but I guess that is all to be expected when we are just 5 1/2 weeks away from having a BABY!!! I actually paniced last night when I looked at the calendar and how busy we are for the next couple of weeks. I've really got to hunker down and get some things done. But I figure it's better than being bored.

I really should go and try to clean something, so adios mi amigos!
